Disclaimer: Dates sweetened chocolate is sweetened with highly pulverized (till 18-20 microns) dried dates powder which is 2/3 sugar. MYTH: DATES SWEETENED CHOCOLATE CONTAINS NO ADDED SUGAR
Powdered dried dates (or dates sugar) is relatively unprocessed and has 70% sugar in it along with fibre and minerals. To make chocolate, dates sugar is heavily pulverized along with cocoa beans just like how whole fruits are converted to fruit juice.
Due to this heavy processing, all the fibre and the cellular structure of dates sugar disintegrates, thereby releasing all sugar into the chocolate. When eaten, this causes blood sugar spike exactly like added sugar.
Henceforth, if some irresponsible marketer tries to sell dates sweetened chocolate claiming it has no added sugar, tell them you would go for whole dates instead!
